You know… crack a few jokes or something. I also got tired of the frequent references to the ominous stink of leaking hydrogen, when this gas is odorless in contrast to the hydrogen sulfide of rotten eggs. I’m aware that it was the first book in a trilogy but it was pretty unsatisfying on its own. All of the tropes of steampunk remain firmly in place. But kudos to you, Westerfeld for making a pivotal historical event your story lynchpin.

Behemoth (Leviathan, #2) by Scott Westerfeld
Characters I have a lot of room in my heart for Alek and Deryn! I crtezi u knjizi su odlicni i fino docaravaju ovaj svet i razna bica u njemu. True to her more humble upbringing, she provides the perfect counter-point to the palace-bred Alek, though he too rises to the occasion, learns from his mistakes and shows courage in a time of peril.
I have to admit that I’m not bothered by this cover – mostly I love the colours, the graininess and the illustration of – is it Alek?
Leviathan (Leviathan, #1) by Scott Westerfeld
The messenger lizards are hilarious The only reason that this isn’t a 5 stars is because I did feel the pacing was a little bit off. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered. Overall As a lover of steampunk I was very excited for this to be a solid trilogy that I could gift out to teens or children. In Behemoth, his sequel to Leviathan, we rejoin Alek, the son of the recently assassinated Franz Ferdinand and secret heir to the Austria-Hungarian Empire and Devyn, the young British air-corps officer with a secret.
The book is a steampunk and historical fictional piece about the son of assassinated WW1 icon Franz Ferdinand. Another real character masquerading in Westerfeld’s world is Nora DARWIN Barlow who has become critical to the upcoming war effort as England needs more advances in genetics to have a chance against the Clanker armies of Germany.
Instead of being allowed time to grieve, he is forced to flee his country with only a handful of men loyal to him. There were quite a few scenes the book skipped that were mentioned as something that happened or was going to happen. Sep 23, Angela rated it really liked it Shelves: Deryn began to get a little on my nerves with her insecurities about her feelings for Alek.
Meanwhile, Deryn Sharp is also discovering it is hard to live in disguise—in her case, as a boy. It’s packed full of Bechdelicious goodness, from the main character a cross-dressing midship wo man for the Darwiniststo a Turkish anarchist revolutionary, to a rather splendid and dapper “lady boffin” and a Nene with an interesting mobility device. Westerfeld writes with an expertly light touch and manages to hit gently upon such topics as duty vs loyalty, respect for living beings, and the importance of diversity.
What a tool, but in the best way possible. Leviathxn all 3 comments. It’s one of those fabulous novels in which it’s not just the characters who mature and grow as all characters should – the plot adjusts and changes to suit them. She’s in control of herself for the most part, but allows those binoculars of hers to stay on Alek’s face for a liiiiiitle longer than necessary.

Just a Girl by No Doubt. The Austrians dismantle the Stormwalker and use its engines to replace those lost by the Leviathan.
Through a series of events, accidents, and uneasy cooperation, Dylan’s group and Alek’s group find themselves working together and friendship between Dylan and Alek begins to take shape. Towards the leviatnan of the book, she realizes that she has feelings for him.
But I still enjoyed it immensely. The Austrian engines prove to be much more powerful than its previous ones, propelling them quickly away from wetserfeld and Herkules, a deadly Clanker ship.
Again, I loved this book and these characters. Her secret was safe, it seemed. She has just joined the British air service. Probably closest in style to a blend of Pullman and Nix. Deryn and Alek are still on board the Leviathan, heading for Istanbul.
